Textile Exchange’s Organic Cotton Round Table (OCRT) has evolved to become THE shared space for the organic cotton community to gather and collaborate. In May 2018, Textile Exchange introduced the concept of the Regional-OCRT in Izmir (see the Highlights Report and video here). Join us at the next event on 10-11th May 2018 during the 9th EKOLOJİ Trade Show, hosted and sponsored by our collaboration partner, IZFAS. Together we can make the Regional-OCRT as impactful as possible for Turkey, Egypt and Central Asia.

Textile Exchange is delighted to invite you to join us in Izmir this May for the 3rd Regional Organic Cotton Round Table (OCRT), hosted in collaboration with IZFAS at the 9th EKOLOJİ Trade Show.

10-11th May 2018 (excursion and networking dinner on the 10th, and Regional OCRT event on the 11th)

Fuarizmir, İzmir – Turkey’s newest and biggest fair complex.

The full agenda will be released soon. In the meantime, you can read an outline of each day below.

Join us for a visit to an organic cotton field on Thursday morning to learn from organic cotton farmers how they prepare the fields, purchase seed, and preserve their deep knowledge of sustainable agriculture, which is certified and conscious of water, biodiversity and the communities involved. It will be sewing season, so let’s be part of kicking off a hopefully very rewarding organic cotton season in the Izmir region.

In the afternoon, we will visit the famous historical site of Ephesus, an ancient city rich in culture, art, and politics since 10th century BC. The tour will be in English.

In the evening, there will be a complimentary networking dinner for all participants of the Regional OCRT as well as exhibitors from the textile sector of the EKOLOJİ Trade Fair. It was a delightful get-together last year and highly appreciated by all, so we look forward to repeating the occasion this year.

The Regional OCRT will be kicked off by Textile Exchange and Z. Gül Sener, Executive Board Member of fuarizmir. This will be followed by a keynote address from Helmy Abouleish, CEO of the SEKEM initiative in Egypt. The rest of the morning will be dedicated to the production and market situation of organic cotton in Turkey, Egypt and Central Asia – a region that produces more than 20% of organic cotton globally. The countries in this region have much in common but, at the same time, also have unique, country-specific challenges and opportunities. We will discuss integrity, transparency, quality, and what is needed to support value networks within the region.

For the afternoon, key topics have been selected for discussion that are crucial to developing a more sustainable sector. These will take the form of breakouts, with the introduction of suppliers from the EKOLOJİ Trade Fair. Themes will include: Denim product innovations, business innovations; and recycling; Luxury products and the market for long-staple organic cotton; and Digitalization and how Industry 4.0 supports more sustainable production. We will end the day with a casual get-together hosted by our partner, IZFAS.
